QNT 561 APPLIED BUSINESS RESEARCH & STATISTICS COMPLETE CLASS
Chapter 2 answers
2.37
Sample mean = (3.2+2.5+2.1+3.7+2.8+2.0)/6 = 16.3/6 = 2.717
The median is the middle value when the data set is ordered.
Here since we have even number of observations we need to find the average of the two middle values.
Ordered data: 2.0, 2.1, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 3.7
Median = (2.5+2.8)/2 = 2.65
2.38
a. Mean = Sum/n = 85/10 = 8.5
b. Mean = Sum/n = 400/16 = 25
c. Mean = Sum/n = 35/45 = 0.778
d. Mean = Sum/n = 242/18 = 13.444
Week 1 Dq1:
How may variance and standard deviation be applied to a real-world business-related problem? Provide a specific application in which these measures are useful.
Week 1 Dq2
When would you use Chebyshev’s theorem and the empirical rule in business? How are they calculated? Provide one real-life example that requires Chebyshev’s theorem and one that requires the empirical rule.
Week 2
Assignments:
Business Research Methods Part I
Electronic books are becoming more popular because it offers portability, flexibility, larger capacity, and affordability. Barnes and Noble recognize the need to evaluate this change and therefore conduct a business research to determine the best approach to modify the business strategy. The learning team will determine an appropriate business research method to conduct a survey. The survey will be a series of questions from this organizational dilemma to this problem. Defining the problem will assist in determining an appropriate research design that will include characteristics, such as independent and dependent variables, and operational definitions. Additionally, the research will provide a sample design to use for collecting data.
Week 2 Dq 1:
What are some examples of operational definitions in research design within your profession? For example, in the education field, graduation rate and retention rate are important operational definitions to measure progress of students. Likewise other professions have common metrics and definitions. Identify some metrics and operational definitions from your own career or a profession that you know well. Tell us why you think it is important!
Week 2 Dq 2:
What is the purpose of sampling? What are some concerns and dangers of sampling? How important is the sample design to data validity? Explain. Provide an example where a sample might misrepresent data validity. For example, reflect on the current political campaign and the pollsters!

Week 3 Dq 1:
In your organization’s management development program, there was a heated discussion between people who claimed that theory is impractical and not effective, and others who claimed that effective theory is the most practical approach to problems. What position would you take and why?
Week 3 Dq2:
You observe female sales representatives having lower customer defections than male sales representatives. What concepts and constructs would you use to study this phenomenon? How might the concepts or constructs relate to explanatory hypotheses? Explain.

WEEK 4
Assignment:
QNT 561 Week 4 Business Research Methods, Part II
Barnes & Noble Research Method Part II
Barnes & Noble continues to explore the data collecting process design. The validity of the data is contingent on the appropriate collection method of the sample data. Therefore, the design of the questionnaire is important to consider in this process. The design of the questionnaire will include an appropriate response type such as ranking the results. Ranking the data is one of the general response types to use. The research team will classify the findings in the order of power. These determinations of ranking and order of power will assist the researchers in the development of appropriate questions for the questionnaire.
Week 4 Dq 1:
How does technological advancement affect the ability to collect data? Provide examples. Does this advancement increase the chance for errors? Explain.
Week 4 Dq2:
What is the importance of pretesting questions and instruments? What are risks of not doing this? Provide an example.

Barnes &Noble Business Research MethodsIII
Barnes & Noble is a popular book chain. The question to answer by the analysis is there is a reduction in sales of hardcover and paperback books since the release of the electronic reading devicesavailable. Continuing the analysis from the previous weeks, Team A researches Barnes & Noble data collection techniques and performs further analysis. In reviewing the analysis data, the Team is able to explore potential challenges that can come from the validity and reliability of the questionnaire survey. The Team explores steps to overcome these challenges and adding itinto the general response types. Thereafter, the team is able to classify the findings in order of power.
